The Kano zonal office of National Agency for Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and other related matters (NAPTIP) has began a sensitization programme around states within the zone.

Alhaji Ahmed Bello, the director in charge of the zone disclosed this in Kano recently. He said the aim of the exercise was to mobilize traditional institutions, religious organizations, school children, teachers and opinion leaders against the ugly practice.

Bello said further that the issue of women and child trafficking was an ill wind that would do nobody any good. He said the zonal agency started the exercise with three states of Jigawa, Borno and Taraba by selecting major prone local government areas, especially the border towns which are used as transit points.

The director added that to let the message of the programme get to the target audience, they used the languages of the immediate environment which include Hausa, Kanuri, Fulani, Jukun and English in some circumstances.

According to him, the ethnic wars and communal clashes cause the engagement of children for militia activities while the search for quick money leads others to traffic in persons across borders.

Bello also said the zonal office has arrested 11 suspects who traffic in persons and also rescued 79 children who have already been re-united with their relations, adding that nine cases were under investigation. The zonal director said the target destinations of those who trafficked in persons across borders are Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Chad, Sudan, Italy and Spain. According to him, Algeria becomes the last resort of others who could not cross over to Europe.

NAPTIP was established by the federal government in 2004 to curb women- and child-trafficking. The agency has opened zonal offices for easy prosecution of its mandate.
